# API keys

> Create a key so Zapier or your own tools can work with OutboundLegal. Treat it like a password.

<Info>
  **Early access.** API keys appear once the [Clients list](/help/clients) is turned on for your account. If you don't see **API keys** under **Settings → Integrations**, email [support@outboundlegal.com](mailto:support@outboundlegal.com).
</Info>

An API key lets another tool — Zapier, your case system, or a script someone at your firm writes — work with your OutboundLegal account. With a key, a tool can:

* add and update your [clients](/help/clients),
* mark a client's case settled, which is what [case-settled client letters](/help/client-letters) wait for,
* and, if you have the digital bundle, send new prospects to your CRM as **cold leads** (people who haven't contacted your firm).

Only the account owner can create keys. Teammate logins can't.

## Create a key

1. Click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, then **Settings → Integrations**.
2. On the **API keys** card, type a name under **New key name** — something that says where it'll be used, like "Zapier" or "Case system".
3. Click **Create key**.
4. **Copy the key now** with the **Copy** button. We show it only once. If you lose it, revoke it and create a new one.
5. Paste it into the tool that asked for it.

Each key in the list shows its name, its first few characters, when it was created, and when it was last used. You can have up to 10 keys at a time.

## Keep your key safe

**Treat a key like a password.** Anyone who has it can add or change your clients and, with the digital bundle, read your prospects.

* Paste it only into the tool you're connecting. Don't email it or put it in a shared document.
* Use a separate key for each tool, so you can turn one off without breaking the others.
* If a key may have been seen by someone it shouldn't have, revoke it and create a new one.

## Revoke a key

1. On the **API keys** card, click the revoke button next to the key.
2. Confirm.

Anything using that key — a Zap, a script — stops working right away. This can't be undone; create a new key if you need one.

A key also stops working if your account's access is suspended.

## For developers

The [API](/api/introduction) tab has everything a developer or Zapier user needs: how to send the key, the limits, and every endpoint.
