# Meta audiences

> Connect your firm's Facebook ad account so your campaigns can add new prospects to a custom audience for your ads.

A custom audience campaign lets you show your Facebook and Instagram ads to your prospects. Each time the campaign runs, it adds the new prospects that match its filter to a custom audience in your firm's own Meta ad account. You then pick that audience when you set up your ads in Meta.

Audience sync is turned on per account. If you don't see **Facebook Integration** under **Settings → Integrations**, or **Custom audience** as a campaign type, contact us.

## Before you connect

The person who connects needs to be able to manage your firm's ads in Meta. Check these first:

1. **Be an admin of your firm's Meta Business Manager.** Connect using that person's Facebook login.
2. **Accept Meta's Custom Audience terms for the ad account.** Meta blocks audience uploads until an admin of the ad account has done this. The link to the terms page is on the **Facebook Integration** card in the app. Open it, pick the ad account, and click **Accept**.
3. **Keep "Manage campaigns" turned on.** When Facebook asks what to share, choose the ad account your audiences should go into, and leave **Manage campaigns** on for it.

**View-only access is not enough.** If the ad account is shared with view-only (analyze-only) access, Meta won't let us create or add to audiences, and the connection will not work. Ask the ad account's admin to give the connecting person **Manage campaigns** access, then connect again.

## Connect Meta

1. Click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, then **Settings → Integrations**.
2. On the **Facebook Integration** card, click **Connect with Facebook**.
3. Facebook opens. Sign in if asked, choose your business and the ad account, and keep **Manage campaigns** on.
4. Finish the Facebook steps. You're brought back to the app, and the card shows **Connected to Facebook**.

One connection covers every county you subscribe to.

## Use a different ad account for a county

All counties use the ad account you shared when you connected. If one county's audiences belong in a different ad account:

1. On the **Facebook Integration** card, find **Ad account per county**.
2. Paste that ad account's ID (it starts with `act_`) next to the county and save.

We check the ID with Meta before saving it.

## Create the audience campaign

1. Go to **Marketing → Campaigns** and click **New campaign**.
2. Choose where it runs, then pick **Custom audience** as the type.
3. Pick a filter (or all prospects), set the schedule, and save.

See [Campaigns](/help/campaigns) for the full steps.

## What syncs, and when

* **When:** the campaign runs on your account schedule, or its own custom schedule. Each run adds the prospects that came in since the last run.
* **What:** only prospects that match the campaign's filter, in the counties the campaign covers. Before anything is sent, each prospect's identifying details are converted into a scrambled one-way code (Meta calls this "hashing"). Meta uses the code only to match people to their accounts.
* **Where:** the audience is created in your ad account the first time the campaign runs, and each later run adds to the same audience. For a campaign that runs across your counties, the audience is named after your campaign, followed by "(Outbound Legal)".
* **Emails:** custom audience campaigns don't send a run email. A run with no new prospects simply adds nothing.

The audience is yours, in your ad account. You decide which ads use it and what you spend, in Meta's own tools.

## Reconnect or disconnect

On the **Facebook Integration** card:

* **Reconnect** runs the Facebook steps again. Use it if something changed in Meta, such as a new ad account or new permissions. Reconnecting resets every county to the ad account you share.
* **Disconnect** stops audience syncing for all counties and pauses your custom audience campaigns. A sync already in progress finishes first. Audiences already in your ad account stay there.

## If syncing stops

The most common cause is a permission change on the Meta side — for example, the connecting person's access was lowered to view-only, or they left the firm. Ask your Meta admin to confirm the person has **Manage campaigns** on the ad account, then click **Reconnect**. If that doesn't fix it, contact us.
